valentino: the last emperor

on monday my mom took my dear friend ali and me to see valentino: the last emperor at film forum. for all you non fashionistahhhhhhhs out there (johnny), valentino was pretty much the last couturier and also a hugeeee pug lover who was one of the most influential designers of the mid 20th to early 21st century. he was most widely known for his use of the "valentino red" dress at the end of each of his fashion shows, as well as his impeccable couture dresses and his VERY tanned skin.
more or less the film gave a brief overview of his 45 year career and how it ended with the monumental celebration of his accomplishments in rome. the film also focuses on the relationship between valentino and his lover/business partner giancarlo, which is very inspiring to young couples everywhere. in the interviews with giancarlo, he talks about how stubborn valentino is and how they always have to compromise with one another for the sake of their company and relationship.
essentially, everyone who likes anything should go see the film or rent it when it comes out on dvd because it is WORTH IT.

old-ish stuff

random pictures of things i've made over the course of sophomore year:

johnny's birthday cake (vanilla cake with powdered sugar frosting and strawberries) & my dress (black stretch woven novelty with lace applique. it ended up shrinking in the wash and got totally ruined.)
full-ish view of my dress (and lisa) at hotel sax

new years eve dress. cotton jersey.

givenchy inspired dress. nylon/lycra blend jersey

dior inspired jumpsuit. china silk.

chanel inspired dress & cape. wool & wool/poly wovens.

tennis, anyone?

my men's activewear project for my sketching class. if you can't tell, i hate sports so i made it as ready-to-wear as i could.

bubble new york!

yesterday my mom and i went to the bubble kids trade show and it was theeeeeee cutest thing on the planet. my cheeks hurt from smiling at everything. unfortunately we weren't buyers so we couldn't lurk through people's stuff, but i got a few names and people who said they would be interested  in me applying for an internship (yay!).

i was wearing my bleached shirt (below) with little creature appliques on it and a few people said it was really cool. one guy even asked if it was totoro. frances was wearing a shirt i'd made for her last christmas and a few people said they like that as well.
(the orange thing on the front view is a sticker the people from acme world zoo gave me)

menswear

alexander mcqueen inspired menswear for my apparel design class.

top and skirt

my draping blouse and skirt project. we were given flats of a look and had to interpret the sketch as best as we could.
i decided to be thrifty (or broke) and scrounge around my room for fabrics. the blouse is made out of powder blue and white seersucker (courtesy of ian
mcpheely's old curtains) with gray/metallic shell buttons (thanks mom), and the skirt is made from dark olive green crepe (courtesy of eileen fisher fabric bin).

please excuse my lack of cropping and messiness of my room. also, if you look closely on the back view you can see my lovely rat poindexter.
